Why hire a copywriter, and why this one.

Why hire a copywriter?

Because things need writing and you don’t have time? Because Gary from Sales can’t use Microsoft Word properly?

Well yes, perhaps, but a good copywriter offers something else.

A good copywriter takes the time to understand who you are as a business, and they take even more time to understand who your customers are. Then they find a way for one to communicate effectively with the other.

It’s kind of like marriage counselling, but with one side (your customer) being particularly needy, demanding and fickle. So maybe just like marriage counselling, in some cases.

Copywriters like me also come with weapons – tried and tested ways of writing and structuring things which improve the chances of your message being read, understood and acted upon.

Good copywriting is an investment, not an expense. It can make all your other efforts pay off.



Why Words Written?

The world isn’t short of copywriters, and there are even internet robots you can enlist to produce your words nowadays. So, why me?

I was the kid who stayed late after English lessons because I was still perfecting my weird short story about a wasp.

I’m the adult who edits and re-edits my own text messages until every word is useful and on point.

I’m the one in the meeting who’ll go 20 minutes without saying a word then sum the whole thing up in one sentence.

In my younger days, I wrote screenplays, poems, satirical news and thought-pieces about the many virtues of Alan Shearer in the 94/95 title-winning season.

I’ve been a bin man, a bar man, an aeroplane cleaner, a salesman and a product manager in the travel industry.

I’ve learnt that I’m not brilliant at everything, but I’m brilliant at understanding people and figuring out how to communicate with them. That’s my superpower. Invisibility would’ve been better.

I’ve become obsessed with how carefully-chosen words are used to compel people into action, or how they can grab a slice of our rapidly-deteriorating attention spans for just long enough to deliver a message.

This is copywriting in a nutshell, and it’s what I do better than most.
